چکیده

We present the results of numerical simulations of the modal properties of Photonic Band Gap Fibers (PBGFs) in which a structural distortion of the silica ring surrounding the air core is gradually introduced. We demonstrate that surface modes supported within such fibers are very sensitive to structural distortions, and that any asymmetric change in the structure can break their degeneracy resulting in associated changes in the anticrossing behavior of the orthogonally polarized core modes, and the development of polarization dependent transmission properties. Our results provide insight into recent experimental observations of wavelength dependent PDL and birefringence in PBGFs.

Gas Sensor Based on Large Hollow-Core Photonic Bandgap Fiber

One concern in using photonic band-gap fiber (PBGF) as a gas sensor is the response time. In this type of the gas sensors, response time is the time required for gas to diffuse into the hollow-core. So considering a large hollow-core PBGF (HC-PBGF), the response time can be significantly reduced. But in the large HC-PBGF, the fundamental issue is the presence of higher order modes (HOMs). Somet...

Cladding defects in hollow core fibers for surface mode suppression and improved birefringence.

We demonstrate a novel polarization maintaining hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber geometry that reduces the impact of surface modes on fiber transmission. The cladding structure is modified with a row of partially collapsed holes to strip away unwanted surface modes. A theoretical investigation of the surface mode stripping is presented and compared to the measured performance of four 7-cells ...

Novel Sensor and Telecommunication Applications of Photonic Crystal Fibers

Photonic crystal fibers are novel optical waveguides containing a periodic array of air holes running along the fiber around a solid or hollow core. These fibers have recently attracted great interest in many research areas such as in nonlinear optics and measurement science as their manufacturing process allows for a high flexibility in the fiber design. Index-guiding photonic crystal fibers a...

Transmission properties of hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers in relation to molecular spectroscopy.

The transmission properties of five types of hollow-core photonic bandgap fibers (HC-PBFs) are characterized in the telecom wavelength range around 1.5 microm. The variations in optical transmission are measured as a function of laser frequency over a 2 GHz scan range as well as a function of time over several hours. The influence of these variations on spectroscopy of molecules in a HC-PBF is ...

A hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber polarization controller.

A polarization controller was built by pressurizing laterally three segments of a commercial hollow-core photonic bandgap fiber. By varying the magnitudes of the applied pressures, the output state of polarization showed a good coverage of all the possible polarization states on the surface of the Poincaré sphere.
